“Street group,” an origin of which it has been explicitly proud since its insignia, the 29th is, among sax-only groups, the most lively.

Here is a new album from the 29th, which in beauty and depth of music ranks the heights of contemporary jazz, while marking the full maturity of a group in which solo aspects are organically combined with writing, and which today seems to be moving in the direction of in-depth work on the repertoire. Already at other times the big band rather than string quartet approach of the lineup has been emphasized, as has the strength of the collective sound; but perhaps in no previous recording is the sound of the four coagulated into a single voice, governed by a single thought, as in this latest album. A work, this one by 29th, of absolute modernity in sound and rhythmic, solo and compositional conceptions, but with but with feet firmly planted in jazz history.
