Mixed and mastered following Charley Pride's death, this previously-unreleased homage to Brook Benton was originally recorded by Pride in the 1980s.
Brimming with vintage country, rhythm & blues (R & B) and pop music sounds, this long-lost, retro-sonic homage to legendary singer/songwriter Brook Benton clearly demonstrates that Charley Pride's versatility as an artist extended well beyond the confines of country music.
Recorded during a brief mid-1980s intermission between his RCA Records and 16th Avenue Records deals, Pride flexed some major artistic freedom when he recorded this project with co-producer Bob Pickering. Unlike Pride's RCA Records catalog which was largely recorded by Nashville 'A-Team' musicians operating within Music City's lucrative assembly-line studio system, the Benton tribute recording sessions all took place in Pride's adopted home base of Dallas, TX. And as good fortune would have it, the recordings showcase the talents of an amazing group of world-class musicians and recording technicians who proudly called North Texas home during the mid-1980s.
When Pride signed on as the flagship artist for 16th Avenue Records, this album and other recording session tapes were set aside for another day and lost. The original multi-track master tapes and a set of stereo rough mixes were rediscovered in 2017 and subsequently mixed and mastered under Bob Pickering's supervision following Pride's death in late 2020.
Other than digitally transferring, mixing and mastering the original multi-track performances, virtually no other post-production has been applied--no instrumentation has been added and no trendy artificial intelligence has been used to modify or enhance Charley's vocals or the recordings in any way.
This special recording is being released on September 19, the 94th Anniversary of the birth of the legendary Brook Benton!
