Former shock-punks gone glam - extended debut album with extra tracks from their Japanese album. With obi-strip in limited red vinyl 2LP
Guillotine Theatre returns in this expanded 2LP limited edition, pressed on red vinyl and restoring the full scope of Cuddly Toys' debut album as it first appeared in Japan in 1979. Long unavailable on vinyl, this edition recreates the original Japanese presentation--complete with obi-strip--and adds significant bonus material, including alternate Japanese mixes, two tracks omitted from the later 1981 UK version, and three rare 1980 demos from the same lineup. The result is the most comprehensive version of a cult glam-punk landmark, capturing both its original intent and its evolution across different releases.
Cuddly Toys emerged from the ashes of controversial London shock-punk outfit Raped, transforming their confrontational beginnings into a more theatrical, glam-infused sound that blended punk urgency with flamboyant presentation. Fronted by Sean Purcell, the band became known for their provocative imagery, gender-bending style, and high-energy performances at a time when such visual expression remained deliberately transgressive. Their association with the underground punk and glam scenes placed them alongside a lineage of boundary-pushing acts, while their recording of 'Madman'--an unreleased collaboration between David Bowie and Marc Bolan--helped cement their cult status among collectors and fans of late-1970s British rock.
The band also developed a strong following in Japan, aided in part by drummer 'Paddy Phield,' whose presence and persona resonated with audiences there and contributed to the album's initial exclusive release in that market. While the UK version of Guillotine Theatre appeared later in a revised form, this expanded edition restores the album's original context and supplements it with archival material that highlights the band's creative peak. As both a historical document and a vibrant listening experience, Guillotine Theatre stands as a vivid snapshot of a moment when punk's raw energy collided with glam's theatrical ambition.
