Dark folk duo draws on friends and collaborators including Mike Watt and Dan Bitney to fight illness with art.
In the summer of 2022, guitarist Zak Boerger (These Wonderful Evils) sent poet Karen Schoemer (Sky Furrows, Jaded Azurites) seven acoustic guitar tracks. Schoemer heard the lushness of 60s folk rock and the virtuosity of John Fahey, but before she had a chance to compose poems, he was diagnosed with cancer; by November, his treatments were failing.
Not knowing whether he would live to hear the results, Schoemer got to work, drawing on the experimental absurdity of her former teacher Bernadette Mayer, a poet from the New York School who coincidentally passed away from pancreatic cancer that month. Using odd word juxtapositions from Mayer's 1982 book Midwinter Day (spider offshoot, mirror ointments, panda on), Schoemer began writing into the cracks in meaning that haunt us in times of rapid change, isolation, and loss.
The resulting album is an unexpected and moving achievement, not least because a shift in treatment brought Boerger back from the edge and allowed him not just to hear all seven finished songs, but oversee overdubs (from Tortoise's Dan Bitney, Minutemen/fIREHOSE's Mike Watt, and others), mixing, and mastering. Throughout Day for Nights, Boerger's guitar and Schoemer's words find camaraderie in instability: rhythm slippages, slant rhymes, sudden silences, and crowded, chaotic outbursts intercut worry with ecstasy and tame the sadness of loss with the succor of limitless imagination.
As These Wonderful Evils, Boerger has released several albums of slow burn, guitar-based music that sit somewhere between Fripp and Eno and Heldon and Earth. He produced Chris Connelly's 2008 album Pentland Firth Howl and collaborates frequently with visual artist Melissa Oresky.
Former music journalist Karen Schoemer contributes words and vocals to several projects including Jaded Azurites, a bass/voice duo with Mike Watt; Ivan the Tolerable, a prolific British collective under the direction of Oli Heffernan; and Sky Furrows, an Albany, NY psych-rock outfit.
