Dusko Goykovich has dreamed, as far back as he can remember, of music, his personal metaphor for life.
Dusko Goykovich has dreamed, as far back as he can remember, of music, his personal metaphor for life. The limitlessness of jazz could never be realized in his native Yugoslavia so he used the first opportunity to realize the dream of experiencing jazz by going to Germany and meeting and playing with some of his heroes. He met Louis Armstrong, Zoot Sims, Lionel Hampton, Hans Koller. Dizzy Gillespie put his bent trumpet into Dusko's hands and, soon, the young man had also begun long-term friendships with Chet Baker and Miles Davis. Goykovich played and established his reputation with Max Greger, Kurt Edelhagen and the Kenny Clarke - Francy Boland Big Band. With Albert Mangelsdorff he founded the 'Jazztet' of Radio Frankfurt, a group that accompanied Sonny Rollins and Stan Getz on their European tours. America offered him great jobs - with Maynard Ferguson and Woody Herman - in his persistent search for his unknown ideal life, but the tours were grueling and long and the pay was dreadful.
