In 1976, to celebrate the 70th birthday of Paul Sacher - the Swiss conductor, promoter, and interpreter of new music - Mstislav Rostropovich asked twelve leading contemporary composers to write a cello composition on the theme 'eS A C H E Re'. In 1994, David Geringas, a pupil of Rostropovich, made the first recording of these works with the students of his prizewinning masterclass.
