On his debut album, Swiss double bassist Josef Gilgenreiner combines two well-known sonatas: In addition to Josef Niederhammer's transcription of Brahms' first cello sonata for double bass and piano, Gilgenreiner and his piano partner Matthias Gerstner shine with Paul Hindemith's sonata for double bass and piano. The Brahms cello sonata literally gains depth through the change of register, whereas Hindemith's claim to show every orchestral instrument at its best in a sonata is successfully audible in Gilgenreiner's and Gerstner's playing.
