The Story
The ingredients: open cantabile, ornaments, impeccable formalism, and the beauty of the mesmerizing themes.
After the success of the debut album comes a repeat performance for the Mani Padme Trio: again an umbrella on the cover, this time closed, and a change of double bass player, as well as a couple of pieces in a quartet with Teco Cardoso, on soprano sax and bass flute. The music, rather than from the parts of Rio or intricate Afro-Cuban rhythms used in jazz, looks to Europe and the classicisms of a Keith Jarrett, without however-let us avoid making inappropriate comparisons-reaching its heights. The themes are often repeated over and over again, the notes made to resonate without seeking any contact with bop-style jazz, repeatedly documented by the record company itself. One listens to them, relaxes, without them asking questions or even doubts of a harmonic or rhythmic kind: they only give certainties, silences-assents to an audience hypnotized by their lazy pacing, bound by the beauty of the themes and little inclined to tackle the rough terrain of improvisation. The ingredients - the open cantabile, the ornaments, the impeccable formalism - we know from Central European pianists. A couple of compositions are top-notch - “Spring” for example - and testify to the leader's good writing skills.
