INSPIRATION is New York jazz pianist Marc Devine's ï¬rst album as a leader since his arrival in NYC.
INSPIRATION is New York jazz pianist Marc Devine's ï¬rst album as a leader since his arrival in NYC. Here is a straight-ahead trio session with veteran bassist Hide Tanaka and drummer Fukushi Tainaka. Each provides ï¬awless backing for Devine as he swings his way through jazz classics such as Hank Mobley's 'Soul Station' and Bud Powell's 'Hallucinations', the lesser-known Hank Jones composition 'Vignette' the cooking 'Osmosis' along with a nod to his inspirations in his original hard bop composition 'Inspiration'. Even a couple of pop tunes including an Erroll Garner-ish treatment of Carole King's 'Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow' and Elvis Presley's 'Love Me Tender' with a Red Garland touch. Devine is both dynamic and traditional, sometimes taking the listener through the swinging roller coaster rides of Oscar Peterson while at other times channeling great hard bop and bebop piano legends like Barry Harris and Sonny Clark. Marc says his real inspiration is playing with this great rhythm section though: Fukushi Tainaka, who has been the drummer for the legendary saxophonist Lou Donaldson for 30 years and Hide Tanaka who has been the bassist for the great pianist Junior Mance.
Inspiring! âAlex Arcone.
