One of Poland's most prolific and idiosyncratic musicians, Marcin Masecki plays Monk with his trio
Marcin Masecki is the winner of many awards he performs extensively on all keyboard instruments, sings, composes for film and theatre, conducts orchestras, educates, and curates musical events. His projects span a wide range of styles and his virtuosic fusion of different genres as well as the blurring of the line between high art and entertainment have become his hallmarks.
The experience of Thelonious Monk has left an enduring mark on the Polish pianist. Like Monk, the binarity of composition and improvisation does not interest him at all, and for Masecki too, composition is coagulated improvisation, while improvisation is described as 'instant composing.' For Masecki, the space in between is absolute freedom. Most recently, he experienced that in his piano solo program 'Boleros Y Mas', where he worked on Latin songs as a classic and jazz pianist (Masecki lived with his parents in Colombia for a while as a child). With his instrumental colleague Piotr Orzechowski, he dared to do a 'Bach Rewrite' on two e-pianos, and with his first jazz band Pofesjonalizm, he released an album in 2010 called Chopin Chopin Chopin. On the albums Bob and John, he experimented for the first time on the upright piano with lo-fi components in his music, Mozart's original six-voice canon musical joke 'Leck mich im Arsch' ('lick my arse') arranged for two pianos and woodwind as a piece of contemporary chamber music, and in the duo with drummer Jerzy Rogiewicz, he played ragtime piano as if he had never done anything else.
