The Story

Maria Faust reimagines the march, transforming its militaristic roots into a striking artistic and social statement.

Maria Faust's Marches Rewound & Rewritten is a bold and socially critical work that dismantles the march's historical role as a tool of propaganda, hierarchy, and oppression. Growing up in the Soviet Union, Faust experienced firsthand how the march was used to dictate narratives. With this album, she rewinds and reshapes its structure, exposing its deceptions and reclaiming it as a medium for truth.

As with her previous works under Sacrum Facere, Faust infuses deep symbolism into her compositions. This time, she centers the snare drum--the instrument that has long dictated the rhythm of military movements. By slowing down, distorting, and inverting these rhythmic patterns, she transforms the march from a tool of tyranny into a medium of defiance and artistic liberation.

The album draws parallels between war at the geopolitical level and violence within homes, exploring the cyclical nature of conflict. Faust questions: Where does violence begin? How do we break the patterns passed through generations? The work extends the themes of her choral piece Mass of Mary, which was dedicated to victims of domestic violence.

The compositions shift between ominous, foreboding rhythms and deeply mournful tones, emphasizing the psychological and human toll of war. With a heightened percussive presence, the music serves as both a reflection and a warning--reminding us that while war is often glorified, for many, it is an ongoing and painful reality.

Marches Rewound & Rewritten is not just an album; it is an act of resistance. By breaking down the march's traditional role, Maria Faust forces listeners to confront the uncomfortable truths behind its history and the violence it represents.
