The Story

Boulez Marteau san maitre

...a particular virtue of this performance that no attempt is made to smooth over the texture's brittle surface, and Linda Hirst's account of the intermittent but crucial vocal part offers an ample variety of tone colour that reinforces Le marteau's affinity with that earlier, equally uncompromising modern masterwork, Pierrot lunaire. Gramophone. Boulez was probably one of the most outstanding and best known musicians of the second half of the 20th Century. Mainly celebrated as a great conductor, his works are a major part of the Modern repertoire. His Piano Sonata displays both the intellectual command and lyrical capacity which is demonstrated in his later work. Le Marteau sans Maitre for Mezzo Soprano and Ensemble is a masterpiece at many levels. In this work Boulez juxtaposes European music with African percussion and Balinese gamelan sounds; Japanese koto and the all-embracing flute. Based on short texts by Rene Char, the music appears in nine short sections and the voice becomes like one of the instruments. The Mezzo Soprano Linda Hirst and Lontano, conductor Odaline de la Martinez deliver a spot on performance.
