Balkan Bop, we are served a simmering polyrhythmic menu, mixed with bop and swing veins and Arab and Albanian folkloric elements. With Kapedani, Goloubev and Sirkis, while rigorous in their adherence to form, they are totally in tune with the leader's beating and emotional forays; in some passages it sounds like listening to a funky rhythm section; the intensity borders on impulsive, but never has any tempo lapses. This fullness of sound makes this trio seem like a larger ensemble, grinding out ideas to the pressing rhythm of a Balkan fanfare, à la Bregovic, just to make a point. The disc lives on the alternation of cultured and popular, energy and lyricism, nobility and tradition, aesthetics, style and total control of the keyboard, on which the artist pours all his energetic passion and fluid compositional vein, moving between Arab-Balkan intonations and jazz harmonic structures.
