The Story

Mistress Dispeller is a compelling American-Chinese documentary directed by Elizabeth Lo that offers rare, intimate access to a hidden industry in modern China--professionals hired to dismantle extramarital affairs and preserve marriages. The film follows Wang Zhenxi, a so-called 'mistress dispeller,' who is brought in by a woman desperate to end her husband's relationship with another partner. Operating through emotional strategy, psychological insight, and careful manipulation, Wang inserts herself into the lives of all involved, turning a private crisis into a complex and deeply human narrative.

Premiering at the 81st Venice International Film Festival in 2024 and later released in the United States by Oscilloscope in 2025, the film blends observational documentary techniques with a cinematic sense of tension and unfolding drama. Director Elizabeth Lo--who also serves as cinematographer--captures the evolving dynamics of the relationship with remarkable closeness, allowing perspectives to shift between husband, wife, and mistress. The result is a layered portrait that resists easy judgment, instead exploring the emotional, cultural, and societal pressures that shape modern relationships in contemporary China.

Both a sociological study and an intimate character-driven story, Mistress Dispeller examines themes of love, fidelity, gender roles, and the negotiation between personal desire and social expectation. With its restrained yet immersive approach, the film reveals the unseen mechanisms people turn to in moments of crisis, offering a nuanced and thought-provoking look at the complexities of marriage and human connection.
