The Story
Northern indigenous music meets a big orchestra.
Sámi music has deep roots in traditional yoik, while big band music dates back to the 1930s United States. The cornerstones of the big band tradition are rhythm and jazz music, as well as the seamless playing of wind sections and percussion. The most important musical instrument of Sámi music is the human voice. Improvisation plays an important role in both traditions.
In the Davvi Oktavuohta - Pohjoinen Yhteys (Northern Connection) project, Finnish Sámi yoikuist, singer and actress Ingá-Máret Gaup-Juuso and the Oulu All Star Big Band, the pride of rhythmic music from Oulu, join forces. Northern indigenous music meets a big orchestra. The music of Gaup-Juuso, who has also been successful in the Sámi Grand Prix competition, and traditional Sámi yoiku have been arranged for big band. The arranger is drummer, composer and arranger Mikko Hassinen. Jazz drummer Hassinen is a long-time member of the contemporary folk music ensemble Värttinä and is able to interestingly combine both folk music and big band traditions in his arrangements.
In addition to Ingá-Máret Gaup-Juuso, Davvi Oktavuohta's soloist is the distinguished jazz trumpeter and artistic director of the Oulu All Star Big Band, Jukka Eskola. Eskola's expressive soloing complements this encounter of styles. The project's conductor is Jaakko Jauhiainen, a musician from Oulu, music pedagogue and conductor who has played in the Oulu All Star Big Band since it was founded.
