It is not surprising to note that some of the formal elements in the piano trio approach developed in this record can be traced to Jarrett's projects today.
Bley’s was therefore a long journey in search of an original, aesthetically innovative, always very personal style. In him, one should not look for superficial emotions as his music is substance, rationality of construction, and solidity of concept in a context of extreme formal freedom. Sometimes lyrical, other times harsh and cryptic, often rarefied and minimal, Bley’s sound is always unique and immediately recognizable. In this respect, the Canadian is an atypical pianist always poised between intimacy and abstraction, between tradition and experimentation. When Bley arrived in Italy with his trio to record Ramblin’ he was now a complete musician who had been exploring the expressive possibilities of the trio for years with some of the best representatives of the avant-garde. In Rome with Bley and Altschul was the bassist Mark Levinson “a rhythm section with a wide range of talents”, as Bley later defined it. Ramblin’ is one of Bley’s most important albums and from a certain point of view represents, on a compositional and musical level, a condensation of the artistic and life experiences of the Montreal pianist.
