The Story
Rubber’s Lover (Spine #1) arrives on Blu-ray in a Director Approved Special Edition, presenting Shozin Fukui’s underground cyberpunk nightmare in a stunning NEW 4K restoration. Shot in stark black and white on 16mm, this brutal fusion of body horror, industrial paranoia, and high-concept science fiction remains one of the most extreme and uncompromising visions of Japanese experimental cinema.
In a dystopian landscape of rogue laboratories and urban decay, sadistic scientists conduct violent experiments designed to unlock psychic powers through sensory overload and chemical manipulation. As subjects are pushed beyond human limits, the line between enhancement and annihilation collapses into chaos. What follows is a descent into technological madness—where wires, flesh, drugs, and static merge in a nightmarish assault on the senses. From the visionary mind of Shozin Fukui (964 Pinocchio), Rubber’s Lover is an abrasive, hallucinatory journey through industrial horror and psychic disintegration.
This Director Approved Special Edition features a 1080p High Definition presentation of a NEW 4K restoration by New Wave Video from the original 16mm camera and sound negatives. Exclusive new supplements include “Rubber Vision’s” – an interview with Shozin Fukui; “Posi-Punk” – Jasper Sharp on Rubber’s Lover; and “Technological Oblivion & Transcendence” – a video essay by Suzanne Boleyn. Also included are the theatrical trailer and a booklet featuring NEW essays by Michelle Kisner and Stanley Luk. The release showcases newly commissioned artwork by Lucas Peverill, inner design by Grindhead Productions, and the original theatrical art on the reverse. Housed in a classy slipcover with UV/Spot Gloss finish, this 1080p Blu-ray edition preserves the film’s raw, visceral aesthetic while elevating its presentation for collectors.
NOTE: New Wave Video releases are not shrinkwrapped by the label. This title is issued unsealed as part of the manufacturer’s standard packaging practice.
