A level-headed quintet led by Steve Nelson in a fiery session

Steve Nelson's collaboration with Bobby Watson dates back a long time. Their ability to interact in a subtle dialectical interplay that alternates between the vehemence, the warmth of the well-known saxophonist, who has now carved out a starring role in the jazz world, and the sinuous, elegant lines of the vibraphonist is therefore not surprising. Who has ample opportunity to confirm himself as a respectable instrumentalist in these two valuable albums Nelson joins that list of vibraphonists who seek to combine the verb of Milt Jackson with the more unprejudiced one of Bobby Hutcherson. Gifted with a sure musicality, he improvises extensively highlighting richness of ideas, at ease on both the slow and medium ballad tempos as well as on faster tempos (an example is the incredibly fast sweeping solo in The Song Is You). Elegant and rational, his style creates a fortunate contrast to Watson's all visceral but no less logical one.
