Two world class artists tap into their jazz and world music roots to create an exotic and evocative ambient soundscape.
The shakuhachi bamboo flute is central to a 1,000-year-old Zen Buddhist meditative tradition. It is usually played solo. The bansuri bamboo flute in classical Indian raga music is also traditionally played without chord accompaniment (just percussion and tambura).
Steven Halpern writes: 'Some of the melodies Jorge played near the end of his solo were just too beautiful to be heard only once. Working with recording engineer Warren Kahn, we cloned certain phrases and added them earlier in the track. I also added echoes at the end of several tracks to deepen the hypnotic, meditative effect. 'As producer, I was inspired by Teo Macero, who employed these concepts on Miles Davis's classic jazz/fusion album, 'Bitches Brew'.
Jorge Alfano and I both were inspired in the 1960's by Tony Scott's trailblazing 'Music for Zen Meditation', which featured clarinet and koto, but no keyboards or harmony.'
Steven Halpern is the trail-blazing pioneer of Sound Therapy and New Age healing music since his 1975 release of 'CHAKRA SUITE.' He has produced over 100 recordings that have helped define the ambient soundscape field. Halpern's early career was primarily as a jazz/fusion trumpet and guitar player. He has performed and/or recorded with a wide range of all-star musicians in world (African, Brazilian) and jazz, including Paul Horn and Paul McCandless.
Jorge Alfano has recorded and produced 22 albums for his own label, and over 100 recordings for other artists, and a multi-instrumentalist playing fretless bass, shakuhachi, bansuri, oud and koto.
