The Story

. This easy-on-the-ear collection is an enjoyable showcase for a particular and fondly-remembered strand of British popular music.

The King Sisters were a family group comprising six sisters, although they performed and recorded as The Four King Sisters, with the numbers actually varying over the years. Modelling themselves on their idols The Boswell Sisters, they came to the fore just as the Boswells retired in the late 1930s, and for the next decade were to some extent rivals of The Andrews Sisters. They initially performed and recorded as the featured group with the orchestras of Horace Heidt and Alvino Rey, having hits with both, and then had more hits through the 1940s under their own name. This 52-track 2-CD collection comprises selected A & B sides on the Brunswick, Bluebird, Victor and RCA labels from this era, and features all their career hits under their own name, including the Top 10 entries 'The Hut-Hut Song' and 'Love, Love, Love', plus 'The Trolley Song', 'I'll Get By' and more, along with Top 5 hits with Horace Heidt, 'Hot Lips', 'Oh Marie' and 'It's The Natural Thing to Do', and hits with Alvino Rey. They were a vivacious and stylish ensemble, equally skilled at jazzy high-speed harmonies and atmospheric ballads, who very much captured the spirit of their era, and this collection offers a substantial and enjoyable showcase for their distinctive contribution to the swing era.
