In 1958, Glenn McKinney founded Nau-Voo Records in West Portsmouth, Ohio, capturing the explosive new sound of rock 'n' roll on a handful of now highly coveted releases. Though the Nau-Voo and Mack labels issued only ten singles between 1958 and 1960, their scarcity and raw drive have made them legendary among collectors.
At the heart of the label stood Billy Adams, whose fusion of deep country roots and hard-edged rock 'n' roll produced regional classics such as 'That's My Baby,' 'The Return Of The All American Boy,' and the electrifying title track 'You Gotta Have A Ducktail.' Deacon and The Rock & Rollers delivered the riff-heavy anthem 'Rock It On The Moon,' while Bobby Lawson's 'Baby Don't Be That Way' exemplified uncompromising late-'50s rockabilly with pounding bass and searing guitar breaks. Recorded in Scioto County, these sides rival anything emerging from the established rockabilly centers of the era.
