At the turn of this new Millennium I found I wanted to ask some marvellous Finnish composers I know to set Eino Leino's poems to music. Why Leino, of all poets? I'll quote J. Siljo's description of Leino's text:'They ore, above all, sonorous, lyricalcompositions, as if born to be set to adance rhythm. They have no other purposebut to jingle and rejoice of their own will.'{Hannu Mäkelä: Eino Leino}Kaija Saariaho, Sebastian Fagerlund, Jouni Kaipainen, 0lli Kortekangas, Jyrki Linjama, Riku Niemi and P. H. Nordgren answered my proposal, and these lieds were composed just in time to premiere at the Helsingin Juhlaviikot Festival of 2001 in the MusicaNova recitaI performed with Pia Varri. - Komsi, Anu
