Forkel mentions them in his biography of 1802: 'Six large suites with preludes, allemandes, courantes, sarabandes,gigues, etc. The works are known by the name of English Suites because the composer wrote them for an English nobleman. 1They are extremely commendable works of art, but some of the pieces in them, such as the gigues in the fifth and sixth Suites, may be regarded asmastelpieces of original melody and harmony. '
