There is no certainty as to witch of the Bach`s works are true baroque lute compositions and witch, though inspired by the lute, were written for keyboard instruments. After Bach`s death, an instrument called the Lautenwerk was enumerated in his collection of musical instruments. The Lautenwerk is a lute cembalo, witch has gut strings like those of a lute, but has a keyboard witch is similar to that of a cembalo or clavicord. With help of this, Bach was able to compose without possible limitations set by the technical rule of lute playing. The instrument is also mentioned in the tiltes of his works.
